CASE STUDY

Context: One of the challenges of being an instructional designer and/or an e-learning developer is planning and facilitating meetings with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and stakeholders. 

Challenges: Most of the times, preparing for a kick-off meeting with a SME is like preparing to march into the "known unknown" armed with your intuition and background experience. What do you do when you are a newbie in the field, with limited experience but with great energy and drive? 

Solutions: I designed these infographics with the primary purpose of giving a heads-up to e-learning developers and instructional designers, of all levels, on important aspects to consider when working with SMEs on a project. I divided these key-aspects into benefits and obstacles, so that you can guide your kick-off meeting or your preparing for one. The secondary purpose was to offer a tool that enabled an in-the-moment balancing of your SME's conversations - if an obstacle manifests during the kick-off, you can use your back-up solution, that you thought of due to this tool. 

Results: By using this tool, a newbie instructional designer (ID) can prepare more effectively for a kick-off meeting with a SME, whereas a more seasoned ID can enrich their approach on managing SME relationships and collaborations. 

I designed three versions of the infographic, in order to submit for feedback during the IDOL cohort. The final one was paired with the Quick Reference Guide I designed, containing advices suitable for most of the challenges outlined in this infographic.
